NEWDES by Sompex TIP Rechargeable Table Lamp Anthracite

Dark aluminium, bright ring of light

The anthracite NEWDES TIP is built on contrast.
Its body is aluminium in a deep, dark finish, and
the light leaves it as a narrow bright ring.
Switched on, that ring is what you see; the base
stays in the half dark and frames it.

The anthracite finish takes the shine off the
metal. What remains is a quiet, graphite-like
surface that holds its own next to timber, stone
and darker metals instead of competing with them.

A small sculpture that happens to give light

A flat, circular head above a slim base that
narrows towards the top: seen from the front, a
circle resting on a line; seen from the side, a
disc that seems about to tilt. Every angle
produces a different drawing.

Because the head is adjustable, changing the
direction of the light also changes the
silhouette. TIP works as an object on a console
table just as readily as it works as an accent
light beside an armchair.

Where the light comes from

Rather than sitting under a shade, the LED is set
into a continuous ring beneath the head, so it
washes downwards across the surface instead of out
into the room. Two colour temperatures are
available, 2700 K and 3000 K, warm white and a
slightly more neutral white.

Brightness is set steplessly with the touch
dimmer, and the memory function keeps the last
level you chose, so the lamp returns to it the
next time you switch it on.

From the dining table to the terrace

An IP65 rating protects the lamp against dust and
water jets, so it may come outside. There the dark
version plays its own part: by day it barely
stands out among planters and garden furniture,
while after dark nothing is left of the end of the
table but the lit circle.

At 21 cm high and 13.5 cm in diameter it takes up
very little room, which makes it easy to place two
or three of them along a long table.

Cordless, with its own charging station

A lithium-ion battery sits in the base, so TIP
needs no socket nearby. Depending on brightness it
runs for roughly 10 to 75 hours, and it is
recharged on the supplied charging station in
about 6.5 hours.

Our favourite detail: the moment while dimming
down when the ring is still glowing and the
anthracite body has already merged into the
evening.
